Family-to-Family Education Program Starts

The National Alliance on Mental Illness is offering a twelve-week course on mental illness that is specifically oriented to the families of those who have mental health problems. In the course, symptoms of various mental illnesses are covered. However, the course also covers a number of coping strategies for handling crises, communicating with those who have mental illnesses and taking care of themselves in the context of caring for someone with mental illness. The course is free, and runs for two-and-a-half hours per week. A full press release about the course can be found at this link.

You probably don’t live in Gadsden. I don’t live in Gadsden. However, I didn’t cover this course for those who might be interested in attending this particular course. I wanted to report on it because courses like this can be very beneficial for any person who is dealing with mental health issues among his or her family. Certainly the situation is better now than it was twenty years ago, because so much information is available on the internet. However, the internet has too much information, too, more rants than strategies, and much of the information is inaccurate. Groups like this allow family members to ask questions, be supported, and take a specific program designed to help them deal with the challenges they face. If you have a family member who has a serious mental illness, finding a group like this in your area can be very helpful.
