Major Lebanese Conference Focuses on Bipolar Disorder

Every other year, the “Burning Issues in Psychiatry” conference is held. It is the largest psychiatric conference in the Middle East, and it is being held this time from October 27th to 28th in Beirut, Lebanon. At each iteration of the conference, they focus on a specific mental health issue, and this year it will focus on bipolar disorder. The conference brings together experts from the Middle East, Europe and North America. Part of the motivation for holding this conference is that bipolar disorder is largely overlooked in Lebanon. More information about the event can be found here.

Commentary

This is an excellent opportunity for information about bipolar disorder to reach the Middle Eastern medical community. However insufficient psychiatric care is in Europe and North America, the situation in the rest of the world is far worse, largely because limited health care budgets tend to focus on physical ailments. By bringing together such widespread expertise (this conference is more international even than most North American and European conferences), this conference will bring a lot of divergent views and skills. In fact, the conference is likely to do a lot of good in its own right, because there has been something of a trans-Atlantic divide in the treatment of bipolar disorder that requires more discussion between the various groups.

I am the supervisor of the in- patient and out patient services for psychiatry, SAMSO, Saudi Aramco. I am looking for conferences to send our psychiatric nurses, counsellors and social workers to.

Could you please let me know when your next conference is.

    Regards,

    Johannes Snyman
