Mind Media Award Nominees Announced

The Mind Media Awards, an award given for best presentation of mental illness in England and Wales, has announced its list of nominees for the best presentations of mental illness in the media. Several presentations related to bipolar disorder have been included. The television drama Casualty had an episode in which one of its characters, Ruth, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and sectioned (“sectioning” is the British equivalent of (“committing”). Dawn Willis was nominated for her blog News & Views of the Mentally Wealthy. The documentary “Tulisa: My Mum and Me” was nominated for its portrayal of singer Tulisa Contostavlos’ care of her schizoaffective mother. Finally, Radio Wanno was nominated for an interview with Stephen Fry, who has cyclothymia. The awards will be given out on November 28th, and the complete shortlist can be found here.

Commentary

It goes without saying that awards of this nature help increase the awareness of mental illness by giving special attention to those who have done an exceptional job of integrating mental illness into their presentations. What I find so interesting about these award, though, is their sheer breadth. They combine not only the typical filmed dramatic and documentary presentations, but also awards for radio and even blogging. With the modern media becoming as integrated as it is, it is good to see awards that recognize the increasing of awareness in all areas of the media.
